Hip Pain

Treat Your Hip Pain in Mississauga with Help From our Physiotherapy Clinic

Hips are the largest joint in the body, designed to withstand repeated motion throughout a lifetime. While naturally durable and designed to last though, they are not immune to the effects of aging. The hips are ball-and-socket joints that employ a cushion of cartilage to help prevent friction as we move. With the passage of time, muscles and tendons in the hip can be overused and degrade, and this loss of integrity may cause pain or other problems.
If you are living with hip pain, Mississauga European Massage & Physiotherapy Center can help. See below for just a few of the many conditions that cause hip pain that we can help diagnose and treat.

Causes of Hip Pain

Some of the conditions that are brought on by aging or external factors and which can cause hip pain include:

Bursitis

Bursae are small, fluid-filled sacs that cushion the bones, tendons and muscles near your joints. Bursitis often occurs near joints that perform frequent repetitive motion. Bursae that cushion the ball-and-socket joint of the hip can become inflamed or swollen from overuse. This causes pain during regular daily activity.

Sciatica

Hip pain from sciatica is quite common and can be acute or chronic, mild or severe. Extending from the spinal cord all the way down to the feet, the sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the human body. The term sciatica describes a condition of inflammation around the sciatic nerve, which can cause pain in the hip, as well as lower back pain. If your sciatica coincides with a loss of bowel or bladder control, seek medical help immediately, as this could be a sign of cauda equina syndrome, a rare but potentially life-threatening condition.

Arthritis

One of the most common causes of hip pain, arthritis is a progressive disorder that typically starts off slowly and gradually gets worse as we age. The term arthritis literally means “inflammation of the joint” and may make it difficult to perform even simple tasks, such as sitting and standing. Arthritis can cause wear-and-tear on the hip joint, wearing away the supportive cartilage to allow the rough surfaces of the ball-and-socket to grind against each other and cause pain. There is no cure for arthritis, but there are solutions available to treat the pain and other associated symptoms.

Avascular Necrosis

Avascular Necrosis describes the death of bone tissue due to a temporary or permanent loss of the blood supply. Some people develop this in the hips, which can cause pain in the joint, as well as fragility in the bone, making it more prone to breaks.
In addition to massage therapy and physiotherapy offered at the European Massage and Physiotherapy Center, we also recommend MRIs to help diagnose conditions such as avascular necrosis. The clinic is happy to provide new or returning patients with solutions to help treat these conditions and help them return to their everyday lives comfortable and pain-free.
